Better ADS-B feeder Situation

Outdated, new post soon. No longer feeds ADSBX

In the third instalment of my ramblings about my ADS-B feeder that feeds ADSBExchange and FlightRadar24 I will speak about my setup and things I have learned alongside potential plans about the future of my feeder.

First of all, my setup, for my Antenna I chose the 1090mhz antenna from ThePiHut , for my SDR I went for the FlightAware pro orange USB, for coax I went for the generic Coax from ThePiHut . A Later addition to my setup is the FlightAware 1090mhz filter. Running all this is a RaspberryPi model 4B 4GB. On the software side of all this is wiedehopf’s fork of readsb, Automatic gain optimisation by wiedehopf and graphs1090 by wiedehopf.

Last post I did on this my setup was more or less the same, nothing hardware wise has changed but a few physical things have, What I have changed is moving the antenna out of my gutter, turns out old metal gutters aren’t the best for radio waves (who would have thought) so I moved my antenna from the gutter to near enough the top of an unused pipe (about half a foot higher than the gutter) That in turn gave me more range I then also put the antenna close enough to vertical Which also gave me much more range as The ADS-B signals are vertically Polarised.

Since discovering ADSBExchange I have been using it a lot more and prefer it over FlightRadar24, sure it’s not as polished as FR24 nor have a shiny mobile app but I do like the fact that it puts out all the data it receives from feeders like me without filtering or blocking it all for free, you get all the data from the aircraft and feeders right there no signup or payment required. there are however ads but a low-cost subscription to remove ads exists and feeding them removes them too. I also like the fact that it is community and volunteer ran, the community are really nice and welcoming especially to noobs at antenna and other set ups like me. The community helped me turn my feeder from a small crappy low range one to a bigger and more long range one. This has led me to debate whether to stop sending data to FR24 and close my account with them or to keep my feed and account going.
